Ladies Futsal

HERCULES LADIES FUTSAL TEAM

Hercules FC created its very First Ladies Futsal team in 2022.

Creating a ladies team from scratch in a small place like Gibraltar was of course challenging as those with a passion for football or futsal were already participating in local teams.

We decided to promote the sport and motivate individuals to try something new and introduce Futsal to new potential talents.

Within three months we managed to gather 16 potential players which included modern mothers, young professionals, and teenage students ranging from 12 to 36 years old.

With discipline, regular training sessions and an engaging plan of action headed by the most dedicated, hardworking coach Gibraltar has ever seen, the teams’ passion created an influx of requests from female players wanting to join when the league hadn’t even begun.

I became a coach because of my love for football, but mainly because I couldn’t play anymore due to injury and age, I quickly developed a desire to pass my experience down to the next generation of up and coming footballers. I had reached the pinnacle of my ability as I once played for the Gibraltar National team and so I felt I had some value with what I needed to teach to the footballers of the future as a coach.

I started with a group of lads in their teens and soon moved up to the U23 side. It wasn’t just wanting to show the lads the pathway as I also wanted to move into women’s football and was soon approached, to be the head coach of a ladies futsal team which, as part of the project, would also become an 11 aside team. I jumped at the chance and knew it was a challenge I would thrive at. I took on a group of about 20 girls who were all eager to apply their skills in football and a year on, I am amazed at how far some of these ladies have progressed. Some have been selected for the Gibraltar National team at various age levels, some at 11-aside and some at futsal which makes me incredibly proud.

It’s hard keeping top players and those that have shone have been scouted by the top teams which, even though knowing I would lose them, still fills me with pride seeing them excel and growing as part of their journey. As my team moves on we get new players every now and then, I treat them all like they are my own and love seeing where this journey will take me as well as them.

I couldn’t think of doing anything else right now. I love this project and I love what I do.

Go Hercules!

Mum of triplets & a teen, Katrine enjoyed starting a new sport and it soon became her new passion, she has become one of Hercules’ great mentors.
Jonathan Cartwright has brought his knowledge, discipline and natural teaching abilities to the field of play. He instantly gained the team’s respect.
Macey, our youngest player, has a natural set of skills accompanied by her dedication. She has proven age is just a number when encountering senior players on the field.

The woman’s futsal league were surprised as a new team joined the league in 2022. Hercules women was announced and ready to play, increasing the league to 9 teams!

With the new team boosted and already growing in numbers with their arrival, they were ready for the fight ahead. Defeated in their first league however, the girls have not stopped training and growing since and while the other teams are training for 11 aside football, Hercules continues to train indoors, signing new girls and preparing for the season beginning in April 2023.
